My Brief Career As Ben Lee's Roadie
The date: Thursday, June 9th, 2005
The venue: The Orpheum
The event: Aimee Mann, with opening act Ben Lee
My seat: 3rd row, dead center, on the middle aisle.
The scene...
Ben Lee is finishing his last song.
His band is jamming out.
He walks to the edge of the stage, guitar in hand, and jumps off.
The audience goes wild.
He's walking up the aisle, strumming.
His patch cord falls out of his guitar and lands by my feet.
He climbs atop two seats behind me and is playing.
People are loving it.
He runs back to the stage for the big finale.
He notices his guitar is no longer plugged in.
The patch chord is lying there.
He spots me.
Our eyes lock.
His hand extends.
I am Courtney Cox.
He is Bruce Springsteen.
I jump up.
Patch cord in hand.
We meet at the edge of the stage.
He plugs in.
The circuit is complete.
The wind up.
Hair a mess.
The jump.
Drumsticks in mid air.
The final chord.
The crowd goes wild.
I am forever changed.
